SLAM Magazine's Editor-In-Chief Shares Funny Stories of How Various Cover Issues Were Created

Our first ever music issue earlier this year featured Damian Lillard, and when we started to brainstorm ideas of how we wanted the cover to look, we agreed that we didn’t want him in his usual jersey. We wanted to do something a little more interesting. I floated the idea of doing a throwback jersey.

Dame’s people hit us back, liked the idea, but said the throwback jersey had be a Bill Walton one because he has a song on his debut album called Bill Walton. This was about 48-72 hours before the shoot, by the way. So I’m scrambling for a Bill Walton jersey – I call Mitchell & Ness, I call the Portland Trail Blazers, adidas, eBay – and we quickly find out there aren’t Bill Walton jersey floating around apparently. Come to find out, our SLAM publisher had some sort of relationship with Bill, himself, so he emailed Bill (I was CC’ed), asking for a jersey. It was a crazy, on-a-whim shot, but it was worth a try.

Bill’s response: I’m on the International business road, but I love SLAM, I love the NBA, I love Damian and I love Oregon.

Weird. Long story short – with Bill’s permission – the Portland Trail Blazers took a jersey out of the practice facility’s memorabilia for Dame. While we were scrambling, Dame’s people were also looking for one, and they found the adidas one that he’s actually wearing on the cover. The one that Portland took out of the memorabilia case went back to Portland. It was just kind of bizarre that Bill was a part of the process, and he emails exactly how you think he would email. – Adam Figman, Editor-In-Chief of SLAM MAGAZINE
