The evolution of technology has allowed photographers to access and capture moments in nature that previously would have been difficult to see. Photographer Domenic Biagini has just caught one of those rare moments on camera as he was sailing 20 miles off the coast of San Diego in search for Gray whales.
Surprisingly, Biagini came across a group of six killer whales instead, spotting them by their tall, dark fins. Seeing them move across the horizon, he immediately recognized this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and quickly set up his drone. Using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro, he was able to capture the pod of whales swimming playfully together. He said that the event felt like an out-of-body experience.
It is rare enough to see a killer whale in nature, let alone a pod of killer whales. And it is even more rare to capture a video of the whole experience. Safe to say, Biagini was satisfied with his venture out on the ocean, and he described the experience as something he’ll never forget. His video has already received nearly 40,000 views.
